Bring it On

Summer is my favourite season. And although it's not technically here yet, my increased hormones are telling me that it's 30 degrees out, so for me, summer is here.

One of the things I absolutely love about summer is the meals. Colin goes fishing more, and catches me lots of fish! He went on Mothers Day weekend with his parents and caught his limit by 9am one day! So he came home with 12 beautiful rainbow trout. I had hoped there would be a blog entry about his trip, but there's not!

Anyways, last night we enjoyed one of these rainbow trout, along with BBQ'd veggie skewers (the veggies are from Al's Farm Market of course) and some pesto pasta! MMMmmm MMmmm!!

The food isn't the only good thing about the meals though. Location location! There's no better place to eat than sitting on the porch in the quiet backyard, watching birds make nests, and admiring the new veggie garden!

Later that night it was still quite warm, so we lit a citronella candle and relaxed on the porch. It was almost like a mini vacation in our own backyard.

Ahhhh, summer!

The Family Car

On the weekend we ticked off one of the boxes on our "Things to do before baby comes" list.

We bought a 4-door car.

We'd been sort-of looking for awhile, but then found a great deal, so we had to jump on it. We talked to the woman selling it at 11:30am, and by 2:15pm we were back at home with it!

It's a 1998 Toyota Corolla...the newest car I've ever had! Even though it's 9 years old, it feels brand new to us.

Fresh, and Good For You

I just had a mandarin orange for lunch! MMMmmm. A treat! Usually they're only available around Christmas, but we found some at my favourite produce place.

This is my plug for Al's Farm Market in Port Coquitlam. If you live in PoCo, and don't get your veggies there, you're missing out.

We went the other day and got cherry tomatoes, cilantro, baby carrots, onions, mandarin oranges, strawberries, apples, avacados, lemons, limes, green peppers, yellow peppers, leeks and a hunk of deli meat and only paid $20.

The yellow peppers are $1.49/lb as opposed to the $3.99/lb at Save-On. Pineapples are usually $3, Save-On rips you off at $6-7. Cherry tomatoes on the vine are $1.50 and twice that at Save-On. Deli meat is $1.29/100g instead of $1.79+/100g. I could go on and on. EVERYTHING is cheaper, and of good quality (not like Fruiticana...yuck)!

I can't believe I've done an entire blog entry about fruit & vegetables. But I am passionate about veggies and love starting my week with an array of different delicious and fresh things to cook with. I'm also passionate about a deal.

So there you go. Shop at Al's Farm Market on Shaughnessy by A&W.

Mothers Day

Mothers Day was this weekend. Everyone who didn't know that needs to rush out and buy the biggest boquet of flowers and the sappiest card available.

Colin was away fishing with his parents, like he does every mothers day (although this was his last trip on this particular weekend)! He ALSO needs to rush out and buy a boquet of flowers.

I had a great Mothers Day weekend! Not only is it the day to celebrate my wonderful mother, but also to spend time with family and celebrate my sisters (who are both mothers), and maybe me too, since I am more than half way to motherhood!

My sister Jen and I took my mom out to sushi on Saturday, then my mom and I spent the rest of the day shopping for maternity clothes. "How fun could that be for HER?", you ask? Well, she loves making me spend money so I think she had a good time! That afternoon I had a frappachino (first one of the season) with my other sister Heather.

On Sunday the whole family (minus Colin) went to Westwood Plateau for the best buffet brunch you have ever seen! We had the best seat in the house, a corner table surrounded by windows! Beautiful! There, we ate and ate and ate. Then I think we ate some more.

All the ladies and kids got our faces painted. Some members of my family are camera shy so I'll only post photos of the ones who have no say!

Mommy-to-be.

Beautiful Princess J, who tells me every time I see her that
I'd better have a girl. "There's too many boys already!"

D is the LAST person the clowns should have given a dragon balloon animal attached to a 3 foot long balloon stick! I think we all got bonked (us, and the rest of the poeple there!).

He's so fun and full of energy!

Cute little M was very proud of his rainbow painting and was running around shouting "BOW, BOW"!

We also had a gift exchange. To my surprise, I even got a few gifts! Some little tiny outfits for our little one! They're soooo cute! It's funny. When you're going to be a mom, people give you gifts for your child instead of you, but it's exactly what you want! How things change. I guess I can learn to be less selfish afterall.

I'm so blessed to have a wonderful mother, who has, and will keep teaching me what it is to be a good mother. I'm sure she'll rescue me a thousand times when I'm freaking out with my new baby and don't know what to do with it. I love how good our relationship is, and that we can hang out and have fun together!

I love you Mom! Thanks for everything!

An Amuzing Day

Saturday was so much fun! It was the Amuzing Race 3! I don't have all the photos yet, but I'll post what I have now, and add more later.

It went well, with only a few glitches. Like we found out in the morning that 3 of the parks we were going to had changed their names, and were no longer on the map! All the glitches got resolved just in time for the racers to start arriving.

Some members of my electronic community joined forces.

Teams started out at the church building a house of cards. I am amazed at how fast some completed it! From there, they went to an obscure park and chose between doing a Sudoku puzzle and a Japanese ring toss game.

Then the workout started. I don't think any of us (planning committee) realized how far we were going to make the teams run at the next station! They had to find 5 people along the path from Old Orchard Park to Rocky Point Park. I think it was about 2 km of running! Sorry!!

After being exhausted so early in the race, they went up the street to a field to hit a target using 3 person slingshots and water balloons. We only had 20 balloons leftover! Phew! That was close.

Next event was an idea I got about a week after the Amuzing Race 2. They went into someone's backyard and had to search through a yard full of 1300 plastic easter eggs filled with a message that said "Sorry, try again" until they found one of 20 that said "Get your next clue". Again, they finished surprisingly fast.

Then the event devoted to commuting. They went to all 3 West Coast Express stations in the tri-cities. At each station, there was a small ribbon at a numbered parking stall. They had to note down that parking stall numbers at each station. Those 3 numbers, in some order, opened a combination locked box at the PoCo station, which was filled with the next clues.

Pit Stop #1 was next, on a pedestrian overpass over a highway. They're half done, and the first team took 2 hours to get this far!

Next was the messy station. They had to choose one person to search through a box of flour, using ONLY their face, to find a red gumball. What a mess!!
The lucky chosen ones were blowing white out of their noses for at least the rest of the day.

What a pretty Easter basket! So colourful and filled with nice eggs....so you'd think!

At this station, they had to choose between running through PoCo to find answers to a series of questions, or eating a preserved duck egg. The duck eggs were hardboiled. The white part was black, and the yolk looked mouldy! They are perfectly safe to eat, though. All of the teams ate the egg (much to our surprise), and some had no problems at all! Others are caught gagging and dry-heaving on tape!

Time for some refreshment! Everyone went to a small park and found a table full of brown paper bags. They each chose one. In it was a beverage (V8, grape crush, lime pepsi, cream soda, flavoured water, fruit punch...). They had to pour all the beverages together and drink it out of a bucket.

After drinking a large amount of...swamp water...it's time for another run! They had to search through a large community garden to find the flagged gardener. Then from there, they had to search a trail to solve a riddle on the clue. There were many glistening brows at that point, and many people begging for no more running (and I'm sure, cursing us under their breath).

The next event was a "help the church community" event. They had to go to Superstore and fill a shopping list. The items purchased will go to families that need it.

Almost done!

The last event was utter CHAOS! Usually by the end of the race, teams are spread out. Last year I think there was an hour between first and last. But THIS year was different.

At this last event, they had to choose between jumping into an unheated pool OR fishing with a magnet and string to retrieve a dime from a specific year at the bottom of the pool. There weren't enough "fishing rods" for everyone, since half of the magnets broke before the event even started, so almost everyone dove in to get nice and hypothermic.

One team told me that they got so cold that they couldn't even really make out the years on the dimes anymore.

We really didn't think it was going to take as long as it did. As a matter of fact, the first team to arrive was still there when the last team arrived...so there were about 30 people in the pool and 20 fishing into it!

They slowly found their coveted dime and began trickling into the finish line at Mundy Park.

The team who won were also the champions of Amuzing Race 1!

Thanks to all the planning committee and volunteers who put so much time, effort and thought into it. And thanks to the teams for racing and making it all worthwhile!

As for Amuzing Race 4? Well, I think it's time for me to pass the torch on to someone else, for obvious reasons! But who knows...I say that every year.

6 Months Down

I thought it was about time to post a photo of my growing belly! I'm 6 months now (and one week)! I can't believe it! Baby can now hear people over the sound of my heartbeat! It kicks me in the gut all the time, but I enjoy it. It's a constant reminder that baby is getting bigger and stronger!

At the beginning of pregnancy time goes sooooo sllloooooowwww, especially if you've got a case of SADS too. But now, the time is FLYING! Soon I'll have one of these:

Am I ready for it? No. Will I ever be? No. But I am so excited!

Excuses

Are our lives that boring that we have nothing to blog about?

Or maybe we're too busy that we have no time to share our stories of adventure?

I just thought that I'd post my excuse, just incase any bloggers out there are wondering why my blog's been relatively inactive lately.

I left you kinda "high and dry" talking about being sick in my last post. Well, I'm ok (some days are better than others) and sickness is not the reason I'm not posting much.

I blame it on the race. It's here! The Amuzing Race 3 is on Saturday! It's consuming all of my thoughts. It's not consuming all of my time this year though, as there's 22 volunteers, and I have learned how to D-E-L-E-G-A-T-E and A-S-K F-O-R H-E-L-P. Two good skills to learn.

So NEXT week, I'll have tons to blog about!

Thanks volunteers, you all ROCK!

And to the racers: PLEASE drive safe! Please play nice, and please don't do anything stupid, other than what you're told to do on the clues, that is (insert evil laugh here)!

Pray for sun!
